Rekey locks in Dallas

You may like the locks already on the door. That doesn't mean you want the old keys to keep working.

What rekeying changes

Rekeying changes the parts inside a suitable keyed lock so that a different key operates it. The old key should no longer operate that rekeyed cylinder. The handle and much of the existing hardware may stay in place if they are sound and suitable.

This can be useful after a move, a lost set or a change in who needs access. It does not fix every lock problem. A loose handle, damaged cylinder or door that won't line up needs attention beyond changing the key. Explain both the access concern and any fault you have noticed.

One key for several doors

If the house has a different key for each entrance, ask whether the locks can be keyed alike. Compatibility matters. Different lock types may not accept the same key even if the handles look similar. A photo and a count of the keyed doors help start the discussion.

Include doors you use less often. A side entrance or the door from the garage can be easy to miss. For a business, distinguish doors that should share a key from those that should stay separate. A master key plan serves a different purpose from simply giving everyone the same key.

Permission, spares and a final check

In a Dallas rental, coordinate with the owner or manager before changing locks. Establish who approves the scope, who needs a new key and what happens to shared entrances. Our rental rekey guide points to the official Texas source without trying to settle a particular lease question.

Count the new keys you need and decide who should hold each one. After the work, check each agreed door from both sides and confirm that the old key no longer operates the rekeyed cylinder. Keep a spare somewhere useful rather than on the same ring as the everyday set.

For a door that sticks, say whether the difficulty happens with the door open, closed or both. That detail helps separate a key-control job from a repair. Ask for those tasks to be explained separately in the estimate so you understand what is being changed.
