Rental move-in and key control in Texas
A set of keys on moving day doesn't tell you how many other sets exist. Start with the manager and the doors covered by the request.
List the entrances before arranging work
The front entrance may not be the only keyed door. Include a side door or the door between a garage and the house. For an apartment, distinguish your unit entrance from a shared lobby, gate or other building access. They may be managed differently.
Explain whether the issue is old-key control, a missing key or a lock that does not work properly. Rekeying changes which key operates a suitable cylinder. It does not repair every mechanical fault. A sticking door and a concern about former keys should both be included in the request.
Keep the legal question with the proper source
Texas Property Code Chapter 92 includes provisions on residential security devices and rekeying. Section 92.156 addresses rekeying, including tenant turnover, with qualifications and exceptions. Read the current official Texas text for the actual rules rather than relying on a short service-page summary.
This guide helps organize the work. It does not decide who must pay in a particular dispute, interpret your lease or advise on a lock change connected with possession or eviction. Those questions need the relevant official information or qualified advice for the circumstances.
Get one clear instruction for the visit
Establish who can authorize the change, which locks are included and who should receive keys. If a property manager is arranging the work, make sure the person at the property knows the agreed scope. A contractor should not have to guess between different instructions from a tenant and an owner.
A shared building key, restricted key or existing master key arrangement may need coordination beyond the unit door. Mention it before changing parts. If you want several locks to use one key, ask whether the existing hardware is compatible rather than assuming every lock can be combined.
Finish with a usable key handover
Count the keys needed and record who receives them. Test the agreed doors with the new keys and confirm that former keys no longer operate the rekeyed cylinders. Any unrepaired door-fit problem should be identified rather than hidden by a successful key test.
For a Dallas property, give the unit, actual entrance and any access arrangements. Our rekeying service page explains the hardware side. Keep the written scope with the property's records so the next person knows what was changed.
